5 Lessons I’ve Learned From Being Mason’s Mum with Marks and Spencer

Marks_and_spencer_dress

In a few days Mason will turn one and I thought I would reflect on what I’ve learnt in the last year. Being a mum has brought me some of the greatest joys that I could ever imagined! It’s been the best year of my life and I find myself everyday wanting to just stop time.

During the final days of my pregnancy I was so worried about having everything ready. I was running around picking up last minute clothes and gadgets that the baby might need.  The truth is you could own an entire baby store but never be ready for a baby. The change they have on your life is unbelievable but then once you settle in you can’t even remember life without them.

These are the biggest lessons I’ve learnt in the last year.

The days are long but the years are short

I remember seeing this quote about motherhood and after almost a year of being a mum, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve learnt to make the most of every moment because even though some days feel like they are never going to end I know Masons first years are going to fly by. One day he’ll be moving out of home and I’m one day going to miss the days of having a newborn. (I’m tearing up just typing this!)

I have learnt to say No

I have always really struggled to say No. I would always find myself committing to things that were inconvenient or time consuming and regretting it later. When it came to visitors, I never wanted to disappoint anyone so I would always say yes to anyone wanting to see Mason and would end up exhausted from looking after a newborn and entertaining visitors. I had to learn pretty quickly to prioritse being a mum and making sure I said no to anything that wasn’t important. Once I freed up my time I could cherish the quality, people and things that really matter.

Trust your Instincts

This is pretty self explanatory but it has never been more important. There are so many opinions, voices and information out there when you are a new parent. There are milestones and guidelines and expectations and I think it’s important to be open but have always tried to follow my instincts when something just doesn’t feel right. Mums always know best!

Never Say ” I will never..”

I hate to admit it but when I was pregnant and even before, I would see certain things and think oh I will never do that when I’m a mum. Well, here I am doing all those things I said I wouldn’t. iPhone’s at cafe’s, Grocery shopping in his pyjamas, keeping him up past his bedtime, giving in when he says no. It’s easy to judge when you’re on the outside but when you’re looking after a child these things are actually so unimportant and if it keeps them occupied for 10 minutes while you eat breakfast without bothering everyone else in a cafe then so be it!

Online Shopping is your best friend

Ok, technically I’ve always known this but you never truly appreciate someone delivering something to your house until you are a time poor parent! Marks and Spencer has the most amazing collection of kids clothes. I have been shopping with them for Masons clothes since he was a newborn and my orders usually arrive within 3 days!

This collaboration was supported by Marks and Spencer and Shopping Links.

St Collins Lane Mother’s Day Gift Guide

This Mother’s Day, treat your mum to a gift that is as unique as she is. I’m very excited to share that I have joined St Collins lane as a Style Ambassador and I had the pleasure of visiting a few stores last week to curate a gift guide featuring my favourite items designed to suit all types of mums.

Is your mum a glitzy mum or is she all about comfort? Is she a colourful mum or all about the modern basics?

“My style has changed a little since becoming a mum but I have always loved fashion and that will never change… I guess the main difference now is I don’t have a lot of time in the morning to put together really elaborate outfits or sift through an huge wardrobe of clothes. I prefer to have a smaller wardrobe and invest in capsule pieces that I really love.”

THE GLITZY MUM – CERRONE

The glitzy mum is easy to spot thanks to her love of things that shine bright. She loves to make a statement ensuring there’s never a dull moment when she’s around.

The perfect present for this mum is something that is equally brilliant. Turn to Cerrone’s Carmela Collection – a range that remains timeless yet versatile for every-day wear. Hand-crafted at Cerrone’s Sydney workshop by Carmela herself, this detachable tassel necklace of stunning fresh-water pearls and silver cubic zirconia and is something that your mum will treasure forever.

THE ON-THE-GO MUM – ECCO

For the mum who’s always on the go, an oversized bag that fits everything is a must. My pick is this bag from ECCO. It’s a softly-constructed bag featuring a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap and baby ottoman lining. This carry all will take your mum from work to the weekend in no time.

The trendsetter mum knows her fashion inside out. Being a classic mum myself, I love Jo Mercer for its trendy and quality pieces. These boots are classic in shape and the colour is on trend. Boasting a small heel as well, they’re stylish and comfy enough for the mum that needs to run around.

THE MODERN MUM – CUE

Offering timeless work-wear and classic staples, she’ll be obsessed with anything that CUE has to offer. Made from European floral print fabric, we love this classic shirt that features a contrast necktie, a cutaway peplum hem and a contrast button cuff detail. Effortlessly versatile, she’ll be able to dress up during the week for or pare back with denim jeans for the weekend.

THE PARISIAN MUM – SANDRO

The Parisian mum encompasses grace and elegance. Her style is effortless and timeless – think Breton stripes, classic blazers and that ‘je ne sais quoi’ allure. For an outfit that will seamlessly fit in her wardrobe, this look that I’m wearing from French favourite Sandro ticks all the boxes.

Does your mum know her tagliatelle from her tortigliono? Her cannoli from her cannelloni? She must be the Masterchef mum.

Spoil her on an all-Italian experience at 70 Grams. With a touch of New-York cool, their signature 22-inch pizza is a crowd pleaser that won’t disappoint. The menu covers all the staples such as a classic Carbonara Rigatoni or traditional Bolognese Linguine. Eleven by Joey Scandizzo

I recently had the opportunity to do a photoshoot to celebrate the launch of a new product by Eleven. I had my make-up done by Kylie O’toole, Hair by Joey Scandizzo and portrait shot by Andrew O’toole.

As I have very fine hair, a bouncy wave is what I always ask for whenever I have my hair done. I find a straight middle part gives me the most amount of volume and frames my face nicely.

I was also 6 weeks pregnant here so this photo will always be very special to me.

10.05.15 OUR WEDDING VIDEO

wordpress

I’m so excited to share our wedding video, made by the amazing team from Purple Ribbon Weddings. It has been such a big couple of months for me and I have to admit that I’ve watched this video every day since it was sent to us.

Choosing Purple Ribbon was a no brainer as they have made beautiful videos for many of our friends. This still didn’t prepare us for how overwhelmingly happy we were (there were tears) when we saw our wedding day brilliantly edited down to 4 minutes. The whole team were so helpful and lovely and they took care of everything so that on the day we didn’t have to stress or worry about anything.

While we were planning our wedding I did have a lot of people tell me “oh don’t waste money on a wedding video, you’ll never watch it” or “I paid x amount for my video and I hate it.” I’m quite sentimental when it comes to photos and memories and my husband works in TV so opinions always went in one ear and out the other for us. All you have left after your wedding are the memories (and an expensive dress you’ll never wear again) so the more footage/photos the better!

While memories are important they should never distract from having a beautiful day. What was great for us was that we barely noticed Adam and Nathan on the day, they were seriously ninja’s. We never did something to specifically get a shot or worried about where the cameras were. Watching the video just makes me realise they didn’t miss a single special moment.

I’ll be doing a separate post on my do’s and don’ts and all my wedding suppliers next week x

I’m not going to lie, working from home definitely has it’s pros and cons. One of the major pros is that I get to wear whatever I want most days. Hello active wear! I kid..a little. On days where I have a meeting or need to look like a trustworthy adult, a white shirt and tailored pants are about as business-ey as it gets for me. I always need a giant tote for my mac, an iPhone charger (why do they always die before lunch?) and my giant A5 diary (digital calendars have never been my friend).

As to what it is I actually do every day, even I get confused about how to explain my title. I’ve been very lucky to  have worked for myself since my uni days. No two days in my life are ever the same. Some days I leave the house with 2 changes of clothes and rush from events to meetings to the gym and other days I’m glued to my laptop for 12 hours in my home office.

In 2014 I started an online beauty business focussing on natural, organic, vegan friendly products. I have spent most of the last year focussing on building the brand and have been involved in all aspects of the business including packaging, social media and orders. Owning and growing my own business has always been such a rewarding part of my life. I love working for myself, seeing all my ideas come to life and reaching goals I set for myself.

Working from home has also allowed me the freedom to attend events and work on my blog. After starting Tanarah in 2012 I’ve had some incredible opportunities to travel, work with brands I love and meet some really amazing people. I originally started my blog as an outlet for my creativity and 3 years on it’s that and so much more to me.  Even on days when I don’t close my laptop till 2am I still wouldn’t change a thing about my little online world.

My advice to anyone thinking of starting a blog or any online venture is to just do it. Start small, teach yourself, and just see where it goes.

I must have missed the memo that it can rain three days straight in Manhattan in June. I arrived armed with a months worth of summer clothes and ended up wearing these boots every day I was in the big apple!
